Shapes Day

Hi everyone, my name is Georgie and I am a dancer. Today we are having a fun filled day learning about shapes! We will be learning all about 2D and 3D shapes and how easily we can identify them in our everyday life. The only things we will need for today are basic arts and crafts materials, and packaging/household items for junk modelling.

2D Shapes

In this activity we will be learning about the different types of 2D shapes.

With your child discover together how many shapes you can name. First you can draw them and then make them out of string or pipe cleaners. This activity develops children’s shape recognition and the properties of 2D shapes. It is also a fantastic way to support children’s fine motor skills as they trace around the shape with string.

2D Shape Picture

Now we have learnt about the different types of shapes, we are going to make a picture by tracing/drawing around some different shapes.

3D Shape Hunt

We are now going to go on a hunt around the house to see how many 3D shapes you can find! Also keep your eyes peeled for any shapes you can use later for our junk modelling.

A good place to start your hunt is in the recycling! Count how many different shapes you can find. You could take a picture of each one and then talk about the 3D shape names. This activity supports children’s recognition of 3D shapes and their properties. It also helps them to recognise shapes in the world around them.

Junk Modelling 3D Sculpture

Now for fun with some arts and crafts!

Gather any 3D shapes that you can use to create a sculpture. You can make anything you wish. Here are my ideas: a house, a rocket, a car, a castle or dragon! This activity supports children’s creativity, imagination and 3D shape recognition and understanding shape properties.

Extension

Shape Counting: Today’s extension is a counting challenge! See how many shapes you can count in your own home. Set yourself a timer. How many shapes can you count in one minute? How many squares can you count in your home? Which is the most popular shape?
